Typically, electric vehicles can travel between 100 and 300 miles on a single charge according to E.ON , which is sufficient for most everyday drivers. Caranalytics reported that in the UK, the average daily mileage is 20 miles per day (142 miles per week). However, the actual range you receive from your EV can vary from what manufacturers advertise due to numerous factors.

What Affects The Range Of Electric Vehicles?

Many factors affect real-world range in EVs, such as:

- Weather conditions including headwinds and rain

-Driving style

-Vehicle load

-Tyre condition

-Use of climate control

Each vehicle displays its remaining range on the dashboard. Manufacturers provide range estimates in their vehicle advertisements, though achieving these exact figures is unlikely due to factors above. Monitoring the remaining range on the dashboard is not always the most reliable way to keep track. Many drivers rely on the remaining battery percentage as the remaining range indicator.

What is Regenerative Braking?

When researching electric vehicles, you'll find regenerating braking pop up a lot, and for good reason. All modern EVs feature regenerative braking  which captures kinetic energy during braking and feeds it back into the battery, enhancing overall charge efficiency and increasing range. Currently, the range of EVs is generally adequate for most drivers in the UK. Similar to ensuring you have enough petrol or diesel in an ICE vehicle before starting a journey, EV drivers need to ensure their vehicle is sufficiently charged. For the occasional longer journeys in the UK, a bit of planning may be necessary to locate and use a charging point. Apps like ZapMaps simplify this process, making it easy to find charging stations along your route.
